Engineer It

Each unit contains up to 16 hands-on STEAM lessons. We offer a variety of thematic units for the following grade bands:

Lesson 1: Fun In The Sun

Students learn about the sun's role in weather changes, sun safety, and how sunlight impacts our bodies and objects, while also exploring the impact of UV light and creating a bracelet with solar beads to understand the sun's energy.

Lesson 2: Fall Colors

Students explore the enchanting transformation of leaves during the autumn season and create their own fall leaf using tissue paper squares and contact paper to understand the varying colors.

Lesson 3: Squishy Snowflakes

Students explore the winter season, focusing on the unique aspects of snowflakes, and create various snowflakes using marshmallows and toothpicks.

Lesson 4: April Showers

Students learn about the spring season, focusing on how rain influences it, and reinforce their knowledge through an experiment creating a cloud in a jar.

Lesson 5: How Plants Grow

Students learn about each stage of the plant life cycle and reinforce these concepts by creating their own plant model outlining how plants grow.

Lesson 1: Sensory Superstars

Students learn about the five senses—sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch—and how they help us understand and navigate the world around us.

Lesson 2: Thinking Cap

Students learn about the brain's functions, memory, and learning process by exploring growth and development from infancy to childhood and discussing the changes and knowledge gained over time.

Lesson 3: Balloon Lungs

Students learn where the lungs are located in the body, what they do, and why they are important

Students learn where the heart is located, the basic components of the heart, and what it does for the body.

Students learn blood and how they travel through the veins.

Lesson 1: Weather Wheel

Students learn about the various climates and weather cycles of Earth and create a weather wheel to reinforce their understanding of these concepts.

Lesson 2: The Science of Colors

Students learn how to use the additive color system, understand the difference between primary and secondary colors, and explore warm and cool colors by creating a kaleidoscope.

Lesson 3: Light & Shadows

Students learn about the various layers of the Earth, including their names and varying temperatures, and create a foldable to understand the layers.

Lesson 4: Earth Layers

Students learn about the various layers of the Earth, including their names and varying temperatures, and create a foldable to understand the layers.

Lesson 5: Goodnight Moon

Students learn about the characteristics of the Moon and how it rotates around the Earth, then create a painting to replicate the Moon.

Lesson 1: Plant Anatomy

Students identify and describe the different parts of a plant (leaf, stem, roots, tap root, petals, flower, seeds, fruit) and their functions, understanding their importance in the plant’s growth and survival, and reinforce these concepts by creating a 3D plant diagram.

Lesson 2: Leaf Vasculature

Students understand the functions of different leaf parts, compare leaf vasculature to human vascular systems, learn about transpiration, and explore how plants use photosynthesis to convert sunlight into energy, reinforcing their knowledge by coloring and analyzing their own leaves

Lesson 3: Photosynthesis

Students understand the process of photosynthesis and its importance for plant survival, identify the key components and requirements, and reinforce their knowledge by creating their own chloroplast diagram.

Lesson 4: Ecosystems

Students understand the components of an ecosystem, differentiate between producers and consumers, and identify living and non-living things, while focusing on one ecosystem and creating a paper diorama and a clay creature to understand its role.

Lesson 5: Food Chains

Students learn about food chains, including how energy is transferred between organisms and classify animals as herbivores, carnivores, or omnivores, reinforcing their knowledge by creating a paper food chain to visualize how it works.

Lesson 1: My Body Systems & Organs

Students learn about the major body systems and reinforce their understanding by creating a 3D model of the human body using various materials.

Lesson 2: Brainy Bunch

Students learn about the major parts of the brain and its role within the body. They then create their own brain using model magic.

Lesson 3: All About Breathing

Students learn the structure and function of the human respiratory system, including the individual parts. They explore the purpose of breathing and create their own model of the respiratory system.

Lesson 4: Antibodies Attack

Students discover how the body naturally combats diseases with antibodies. They create and match antigens and antibodies to understand how the immune system targets and neutralizes specific pathogens.

Lesson 5: Listen To The Lub-Dub

Students learn that the heart is a muscle that contracts and relaxes to pump blood. They understand how to calculate heart rate and create their own stethoscope to determine their average heart rate.

Lesson 1: Solar System String

Students learn about planets, stars, and asteroids by building a solar system model.

Lesson 2: Layers of the Sun

Students learn about the four layers of the sun, including each layer's temperature and function, by building a model of the sun using model magic and labeling each layer.

Lesson 3: Layers of the Earth

Students learn about the four layers of the Earth, including their depths and composition, by building a 'core sample model' using a test tube and different colors of sand to represent each layer. They will then label each layer with its name and thickness.

Lesson 4: Phases of the Moon

Students learn that the moon is a satellite and does not produce its own energy; instead, its light is a reflection from the sun. They will understand moon phases and learn the name of each phase. For the activity, students will build a labeled wall hanging by cutting and labeling each moon phase from a template and placing them in the correct order.

Lesson 5: Constellations and Navigation

Students learn what a constellation is and how it is used for navigation. They understand that people from different parts of the world have seen different shapes in the stars, giving constellations unique names and creating stories or myths about them. Students then create their own constellations using glow-in-the-dark stickers on black poster board and share the myth or story behind their design.

Lesson 1: Marble Run

Students understand ramps and how they increase momentum and decrease work. They use the Engineering Design Process (EDP) to construct a marble run, learning about ramps, gravity, potential energy, and kinetic energy. Using simple materials, students design a series of tunnels or obstacles for the marble to travel through to the end.

Lesson 2: Catapults

Students learn how levers can be used to lift objects and the difference between potential and kinetic energy. They create a catapult that launches a porcupine ball and see whose goes the farthest.

Lesson 3: Ferris Wheel

Students explore the functionality and structure of Ferris wheels, including the principles of centripetal acceleration and angular momentum. They apply their understanding by building their own Ferris wheel models.

Lesson 4: Giant Swing

Students understand the concept of centripetal force and how it applies to amusement park rides, particularly giant swing rides. By designing a model giant swing, students explore the forces involved in circular motion and how these forces contribute to the ride’s operation and the rider’s experience.

Lesson 5: Roller Coaster

Students understand the basic principles of physics and engineering that apply to roller coaster design and explore the relationship between form and function in roller coaster designs. They design and build a roller coaster using straws and test their model.
