Our Mission

HYPOTHEkids is an education and youth development nonprofit based in West Harlem that provides low-income, underrepresented K-12 students throughout New York City with hands-on education and training opportunities in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and design, and math), setting them on a path toward academic success and well-paying jobs. It was founded in 2013 as the outreach arm of the Harlem Biospace biotech incubator with the vision to create a STEAM talent pipeline that reflects the diversity of the city. We capitalize on close relationships with expert educators and cutting-edge scientists from biotech start-ups and research institutions, including Weill Cornell Medicine and Columbia Engineering, to expand access for underrepresented students to transformative learning experiences. To date, HYPOTHEkids has served over 40,000 young people.

Our Vision

To create a STEAM talent pipeline that is representative of the diversity of NYC

Our Approach

Giving Students What They Need To Succeed in STEAM

CURRICULA

We design curriculum that fosters curiosity, critical thinking and creative problem solving through hands-on activities and experiments. Our trainings are responsive to the needs of employers, because they are adapted to feedback from NYC's expanding life science industry.

MENTORSHIP

Students can see themselves in the diverse scientists, engineers, and teachers they meet through our programs, which helps to redefine their ideas about who is capable of engaging in STEAM studies and careers.

OPPORTUNITY

We provide students with free STEAM training and place them in paid summer internships at cutting-edge research labs and health care institutions. These opportunities enhance academic outcomes and college applications while creating connections to post-secondary career paths.
