Professional Development for Out-of-School Time Staff

HYPOTHEkids provides hands-on STEAM lesson kits (“HYPOTHEkits”), as well as trainings, to K-8 program sites. Every HYPOTHEkit includes complimentary live virtual training, ensuring staff feel supported and prepared to successfully implement the lessons.

For programs seeking more support and deeper professional development, we offer in-depth STEAM EDU+ trainings for out-of-school time staff. Through these trainings, staff gain the practical skills, confidence, and hands-on experience needed to lead engaging, high-quality K-8 STEAM lessons.

What Is STEAM EDU+?

STEAM EDU+ is a professional development program that supports the growth of OST staff into confident STEAM facilitators. Offered virtually or on-site, it strengthens general teaching practices, classroom leadership, and hands-on STEAM learning while building staff’s skills, and confidence.

Who Is This Training For?

STEAM EDU+ is designed for out-of-school time professionals. Anyone responsible for facilitating activities or instruction for K–8 students can benefit from this training.

STEAM EDU+ Sampler: A Taste of HYPOTHEkits — Training + Lesson Modeling
An introductory, hands-on experience for your staff

This 3-hour on-site session combines staff training on hands-on STEAM teaching strategies with the modeling of two K-8 HYPOTHEkids lessons, giving staff a firsthand look at how to implement the lessons in their program.

Part 1: Introduction to HYPOTHEkids Methodology & Kits (1.5 hours)

Overview of HYPOTHEkids’ hands-on, project-based STEAM methodology
Introduction to our K–8 curriculum and thematic units
Best practices for facilitating STEAM lessons in OST settings

Part 2: Hands-On STEAM Lesson Modeling (1.5 hours)

A HYPOTHEkids STEAM educator teaches two 45-minute lessons directly to your students within a grade band of your choice: K–2, 3–5, or 6–8
Staff observe lesson flow, facilitation strategies, classroom management techniques, and student engagement
They will see firsthand how HYPOTHEkits function in a real program setting

Location: On-site at your program, scheduled at a time convenient for you

Cost: $500–includes:

1.5-hour in-person staff training led by an expert STEAM educator
1.5 hours of hands-on lesson modeling
All materials for up to 25 students per lesson

Optional Add-On:

Additional 45-minute lesson modeling session for $120

STEAM EDU+ Deep Dive
Customizable Topic-Specific Trainings

For programs seeking more in-depth professional development, we offer interactive, topic-specific trainings that strengthen staff skills, confidence, and hands-on practice. Sessions are delivered virtually or on-site in flexible single- or multi-workshop formats. Through demonstrations, role-play, and hands-on practice with real HYPOTHEkits, staff gain the confidence to independently implement STEAM lessons in their programs.

Practical, interactive sessions tailored to your staff’s needs
Flexible format and length, delivered on-site at your program or virtually

Possible Topics to Choose from:

Foundations of Teaching: The role of educators, effective teaching principles, instructional techniques, and key learning theories
Classroom Management: Practical strategies for engagement, routines, positive behavior support, and leading productive learning environments
Student Development: Cognitive development (including Piaget’s stages) and social–emotional learning (SEL), with an emphasis on adapting instruction for different ages
Teaching Strategies: High-impact instructional strategies and how to select the right approach for different learning goals
STEAM Lesson Planning: Writing clear learning objectives, structuring lessons, selecting materials, planning assessments, and organizing content for diverse learners
Application Using HYPOTHEkids Curriculum: Staff practice lesson planning and facilitation using HYPOTHEkids K–8 STEAM lessons from units such as Living Nature, My Body Alive, EngineerIt, and Our Universe and Beyond (across K–2, 3–5, and 6–8)
